Back To Our Roots

My Mom got me hooked on the skincare line Origins when she gave me a few products for Christmas. After noticing that years have been erased from her face I decided to give it a shot and try to prevent any more damage to my own skin. My favorite so far is the "A Perfect World" moisturizer with white tea which is one of the strongest antioxidants there is. It helps fends off damage from stress and pullution and since I live in New York City I surely need the help. I have been using it for about a month now and I already see a difference. It is so luxurious feeling and leaves my skin so soft. In the winter months my skin just soaks all of its goodness in! The best part is they use all natural and certified organic ingredients...no parabens, PABA, petrolatum, phthalates or any of that bad stuff.

"New research at several major universities has proven that world-famous White Tea is among the most potent antioxidants, anti-agers, anti-stress, anti-smoke, anti-pollution antidotes. Now its perfect-protective powers are energized and optimized while skin is deeply moisturized. Ferment of Sugarcane acts like a mini-sparkplug to up skin’s ability to neutralize free radicals before they deface skin. Murumuru Butter maximizes skin’s moisture barrier. Rose Fruit Oil hydrates. Centella Asiatica firms. Vitamin C brightens and helps even out skin tone. And aromatic Orange, Bergamot and Spearmint fortify the feel-good factor. Keep your skin in A Perfect World™ 24/7."- Origins

Another favorite so far is the GinZing eye cream. It instantly depuffs and brightens my dark circles so I actually look alive! I think my circles are getting darker with age....or maybe its just that Im so pale from this long winter. Regardless, this works!

I think I could go on forever but I also just remembered that my mom got me the "Incredible Spreadable Scrub Ginger Body Smoother" and the "Ginger Souffle Whipped Body Cream". They are to die for!!

Summer Slim Down #1

With summer right around the corner its time to start working on that bikini body. So stash the winter comfort foods and freshen up your diet. This is my new favorite recipe which I will be making throughout the summer. No more excuses! Its easy to cook healthy dinners...and try to go organic when you can.

Shrimp with Cucumber Ginger Salsa, Sesame Baby Bok Choy, and Coconut Brown Rice

Shrimp and Salsa
Serves 4

1 lb of cleaned, de veined shrimp
2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
2 tsp fresh pressed garlic
dash of salt
fresh black pepper to taste
1 cup cucumber chopped
1/2 cup chopped red onion
1 tbsp finely chopped ginger
1 tsp olive oil

In a medium size bowl combine the olive oil, parsley, garlic, salt, and pepper. Add shrimp and coat completely. Cover and allow to sit in refrigerator for 10 minutes. In a small bowl combine chopped cucumber, red onion, ginger, and 1 tsp olive oil. set aside. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spread shrimp on baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes. Serve shrimp and dress with the salsa.

Coconut Brown Rice
1 cup brown rice. Cook as directed. Add 1-2 tbs (to liking) unsweetened shredded coconut in the last 10 minutes of simmering the rice.

Sesame Baby Bok Choy
2 cups veggie or chicken broth
1 tbs Earths Balance Organic Spread (just like butter but made from Vegetable oil)
1/2 tsp sesame oil
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper

In large saucepan heat broth and butter until steaming. Add rinsed and trimmed bok choy to the pan. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Move bok choy to serving bowl. Add sesame oil and crushed red pepper to the broth. Allow to boil down until you are left with about 2 tbsp. Pour over bok choy and serve.

Enjoy!

I Wish I May I Wish I Might

Dogeared is my go to when I need a little gift for sisters, moms, nieces, girlfriends and more. Small prices with big messages their charmed jewelry each has its own meaning. I will always love the classic "100 Good Wishes" necklaces that you wear until it falls off at which time your wish comes true. With an abundance of charms to choose from you will have a constant reminder of love, friendship, karma, and peace to just name a few. What's even better is that they have an entire eco friendly section with jewelry made of recycled silver and sustainable hemp. Their organic and recycled canvas totes and jewelry rolls would make for a really cute presentation of the gift too!

Fresh Faced

I bet you didn't know that our skin absorbs up to 70% of a liquid substance into the bloodstream. The stomach only absorbs about 5%....With all the recent news about contaminated public drinking water satiated with chemicals and flushed pharmaceuticals, we quickly opt for bottled water out of disgust for what we could be ingesting. What we put on our skin is just as critical as what we put in our bodies.

On that note try washing your face with parsley water. I heard about this great concoction for perfectly toned and blackhead free skin from the facialists at Mario Badescu and it chemical free!

-Soak fresh parsley overnight in mineral or distilled water.
-Strain out parsley and discard
-Pour water back into the water bottle and store in refrigerator
-Add one tablespoon of vodka or a couple teaspoons of vitamin E which are natural preservatives
-Use cotton ball to wipe all over face
-Repeat morning and night or whenever you need or feel refreshed!

I also plan to find a Brita type filtration system for my shower head....I'll let you know how that goes and what it does to my already unfortunate water pressure.

Ecolactobiovegansphericalblahblah Overload

As a woman in my late twenties I realize the many obstacles that we face while trying to live better, healthier...Who do we listen to? How can I afford it? Where do I find it? Its so time consuming. Magazines, the news, advertisments are constantly in our faces everywhere we go with new discoveries, new diet fads, more bad news about what we eat. Information overload..."Only organic products", "no sugar", "less carbs", "whole wheat everything but watch out for the gluten", "less meat", "no meat", "watch your fish" "is it wild salmon?" "Oh not that kind that has too much mercury", "no caffeine" ,"coffee is ok but green tea better", "red wine is good but alcohol bad".

I believe that you just cant do it all but every little bit helps. "MOST things in moderation" is what I like to live by. To be 100% organic from the way you eat to what you clean with to what you wear would just take up way too much of your time. Life would pass by and you wouldnt even remember why you are on this planet to begin with. If you spend all your time going from health food store to another health food store bc the shoe box size one around the corner doesn't carry that sepcific type of kefir or chemical free cleaner you are sure to miss out on some good times. To be honest I am not going to give up having my favorite creamy gnocchi once a month, a great steak that is most likely not antiobiotic free from a restaurant, nor will I not eat off a plate that hasn't been washed with chemical free detergent but I am going to do my best when I can.

Bottom line, if we do not pay more attention to the things we put in out bodies, the cleaning products we use around the house and the amount of plastic bags we waste, life may be shorter than we would like it to be. Small changes can have big effects...We owe it to our children to BEGIN practicing how to live healthier and cleaner.

Tip.. try to incorporate one or two healthy habits into your life a week whether it be in your diet or around the home. Once it becomes normal and part of your routine then its time to add a couple more!
